Heading for the Home Stretch Week of June 1-5

Kudos to Mrs. Perry and ALL of YOU for making EOG Testing go so smoothly!  I am so very proud of Mrs. Perry for all the planning and attention to detail that went into preparing for testing.  She had a great mentor as she learned so much from Mrs. Pubantz but this was her first time solo. Please congratulate her on a job well done!  Also, I would like to thank all of you for your role as well.  You were patient as schedules were turned upside down. You followed testing protocol and did an outstanding job administering the tests. Our lower grade teachers were awesome in their flexibility with support staff being pulled and no recess, etc...  Thank you all.  You are so professional:)

Hooray for Dr. Cheryl Frazier...

We all knew that it was inevitable, but still so bittersweet.  Dr. Frazier will become the new Principal of Bolton Elementary school on June 22nd. She will be a wonderful and effective leader and I know that we are all so very proud of her.  She has that special way about her that makes everyone want to do their very best.  She is kind, caring, and ALWAYS puts students first.  I will miss her smile, sense of humor and professionalism.  As we prepare to say farewell, we start the process of finding a new Assistant Principal.  I have heard from most every grouping. I am still needing the names of representatives from a few more groups.  Please send me your rep's name Monday morning as I will be pulling the Interview Team together this week for planning purposes.

FIELD DAY was AWESOME!!!!  Congratulations to Ross for the planning and execution of a phenomenal Field Day! I believe it was our biggest turnout of family members yet!!!  What a great day.

Thank You to Miss Stevenson, Mrs. Farthing, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Thomas for incredible Concerts and Dance Presentations to end the year.  Thank you to Mrs. Gordon for representing us so beautifully on the Arts Council Panel, for the yearbook and creating performance scenery.  Thank you Mrs. Batten for orchestrating Karma Wilson's visit to our school. She was a great role model for our students. Thank you Mrs. Pullen for administering the district survey to our students.  I really need to thank everyone of you (ALL FACULTY AND STAFF).  You all go above and beyond every day.  Whether it is pre-k presenting their Transition Night or all grade levels who have held parent engagement nights.  I know this is a busy time of the year yet you all continue to go above and beyond.  Thank you!

FYI.......

  • Our Y After school Program will be extended until the last student day which is June 12th.
  • We WILL have a Faculty meeting on Tuesday, June 8th. I will send agenda out late this week.
  • RTA testing is scheduled this week.
  • Summer School starts June 29th
  • We are a WSFCS Summer Feeding site.

As we head into the final 2 weeks of school, please take every opportunity to enjoy and treasure your students.  You have made an impact that will be everlasting.  Keep your schedules as normal as possible as students do much better without a lot of transition. We will have feedback from Dibels/EOG etc.. so use that information to spiral your teaching curriculum and teach up to the last minute as we know that summer slide does occur.  Have a wonderful last few weeks.

As you read this blog, I have one more opportunity this year for you to give me feedback. Please respond to this statement:

"This year, I believe my greatest achievement was..........."

  1. As I reflect on this year, I feel that my greatest achievement was the relationships that I have built with students, staff, parents and the community. I still continue to strengthen and sustain those relationships. It makes me smile when a student gives me a hug and says tells me how well they did on a test or that they have had a great day. I am also touched when they come to me for help and/or advice. They trust me and that is important to me. Building relationships helps us to grow closer as a school. We smile more, laugh more and support each other. I will continue to do my best to build relationships.

  2. My greatest achievement this year was learning how to JUGGLE! (Not literally I learned that when I choreographed Barnum a few years ago :-) )

But seriously... this year as much as I enjoy being the dance teacher and getting paid to "be in a turtle shell" or do zumba 6xs a day I took on a lot of leadership roles that made me nervous if I could handle it back in September. This year with the HUGE support from my team, admin, and all grade levels has helped me accomplish so many giant tasks and really take the plunge into understanding what going for my M-ED in administration will be like. I feel as if I have truly opened up to whole school, whole district, whole state vision in education. SIT secretary, Magnet Coordinator, WSFCS Administration Explorers program, and so on... lets see what else next year holds. I love being a part of DL Family. 4 years has gone by fast!!!

And Dr. Frazier... I will truly miss your guidance... just remember to tell the new guy/gal that the bus lot is mine ;-) ((((and that Ross is once again stuck with car duty!)))

  3. Oh boy this is hard.... This year I believe my greatest achievement was coming in day after day even when I had just thrown up my breakfast before leaving the house or after throwing up between classes or right after lunch, and somehow never letting a students or teacher see me do it! Really the whole being a first year teacher and pregnant thing overall, first concert and all :-)

  4. I believe my greatest achievement this year has been finding ways to help teachers with understanding more about DIBELS and introducing 4th and 5th grade teachers to it. As well as becoming a Google Ambassador and taking on leadership.

  5. I think my greatest achievement this year has been learning how to create activities where students almost forget they are learning. I want students to remember what they did in my classroom and learn something they wont forget. We made blood this year and the students had so much fun, but at the end of the experiment they could tell me all about the white blood cells and the red blood cells.

  6. I think my greatest achievement this year has been taking each day as a learning experience. No college classes could have prepared me for the challenges I have faced during this first year of teaching. But I feel as if each challenge I have overcome has been a learning experience and hopefully has made me a better teacher.

  7. This year I believe my greatest achievement was starting a new Self-contained classroom. With the help of great staff at Diggs-Latham we had a successful year with implementing a new program that was challenging for us all as we learn how to implement these special kids throughout the school. Thank you all for your open arms.

  9. My greatest achievement this year has been building a stronger foundation with my students and parents. Also, including data notebooks as part of my students' way of helping to show growth not only with them, but also with me as their teacher.

  10. This year I believe my greatest achievement was improving classroom management in my classroom. Last year I struggled with this greatly, but I have learned the importance of being consistent when it comes to my expectations and the way that I handle discipline. I couldn't have done all of this though without the help of my great team giving me ideas and reminding me to stay consistent!

  11. This year, I believe my greatest achievement was learning how to function in a classroom setting. After years of being itinerant, it was difficult to create lesson plans that covered all day, everyday. It was also a challenge to incorporate the curriculum for more than one grade level. That is something I would like to continue working on next year.

  12. This year, I believe my greatest achievements have been: The scheduling of initial LEP students, newcomers and transfers; teaching Literacy to several grade levels; and having a school-wide recycling program!
I am hoping the list of achievements for next will be greater.

  13. This year my greatest achievement was building, strengthening and maintaining great relationships with teachers, parents and students. To me great relationships (even when they are challenged) are the basis for excellence in what we do each day to help students realize that they have unlimited potential. To me this is very true...IT TAKES A VILLAGE!
Thank you Mrs. Cannon for the kind words, they are appreciated.

  15. I believe my greatest achievement this year was not taking all 18 of my students home with me. Just kidding, but really, my greatest achievement was building confidence in the classroom and my role as a teacher. I have also realized that you must come to school each morning with a positive attitude and a fresh mind. Complaining about things will get you nowhere, so its much better for everyone to remain positive! It has been an amazing year, and I cant imagine loving another class the way I love these students, but I know I will!

  16. I believe my greatest achievement this year has been perseverance. This has been a challenging year with a lot of curve balls thrown my way. It started at the very beginning of the year with finding out that my grandaughter was so sick, training two new people for the classroom, catching Maria up when she returned from maternity leave, the journey I had with my granddaughter, and some other curve balls here and there. But through it all I managed to find that balance between my class and my family and stayed on top of everything I needed to do for the most part. Another achievement was relationships, because of each of you and your kind words, thoughts, prayers, my awesome team mates who made the transitions smooth when I was out, and most of all my students who for the most part have made awesome progress this year. All of these have helped me to make it thorough and keep that smile on my face! So, thank you all so much! I'm looking forward to summer break as a chance to regroup and refuel. One last shout out to my voice of reason, Maria for helping me to stick to my decision not to work ESY this summer!

    1. Y'all...I REALLY worked hard to keep assuring Mrs. Asbury that she does deserve a summer (a.k.a not working ESY).
I think my greatest achievement this year goes off of Suzanne's as well, perseverance. I was coming back from maternity leave, doing all these new lovely mommy duties, introduced to several new faces amongst the staff, new students, jumping into the routine of what the class had already developed, and facing several other challenging factors in the classroom this year. Everyday seemed to hold a new or never ending situation where "the light at the end of the tunnel" just seemed too far away. This year was challenging in so many ways, but I know just as much good has came out of it. :)

  17. I think my greatest achievement was building relationships and a sense of community with students and staff as I learned the curriculum for grades K-5 in ESL. I have had a wonderful year and have seen growth in my students. I appreciate everyone's help as I learned the ropes this year.
