Week of June 10th.....We Made It...Almost:)

Happy Monday!

Yesterday's service at Home Moravian was absolutely beautiful. As you know they recognized our partnership and the many volunteers who have served us.  We are so very fortunate to have a partner who believes in us and what we do. They appreciate the challenges you overcome everyday.  Please take time out before you leave for the summer to write them a quick thank you for the tutoring, gift cards, treats, cakes for graduation, field trips, reading incentives, landscaping, bike rack and on and on and on.  I will be happy to deliver them.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT:  READ TO ACHIEVE THAT YOU ALL NEED TO KNOW...

·        The Read to Achieve Program is part of the Excellent Public Schools Act which became law in July of 2012.   It becomes effective 2013-2014 school year.

o   The law can be accessed through http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2011/Bills/House?PDF/H950v7.pdf

·        The goal of North Carolina Read to Achieve is to ensure that every student read at or above grade level by the end of third grade.

·        NC Read to Achieve includes seven major components.

Component One- Comprehensive Plan for Reading Achievement

o   NC DPI will distribute the Comprehensive Plan for Reading Achievement to LEAs for 2013-14 school year.

o   Professional development will be conducted on evidence based reading instructional practices.

Component Two- K-3 Diagnostic Reading Assessment

o   mClass reading 3-D which includes DIBELS Next and TRC

Component Three- Third graders not performing on grade level will be retained after the re-administration of the third grade EOG or alternate test.

o   If the students are not proficient on the re-administration or alternate test they may qualify for a good cause exemption.

o   If they do not qualify for a good cause exemption they will be enrolled into Summer Reading Camp.

Component Four- Summer Reading Camp

o   Third grade students not proficient on 2014 EOG will have the opportunity to attend 6-8 weeks of a Summer Reading Camp.

o   Summer Reading Camp will be 4-5 days per week, 3-4 hours per day.

o   Teachers will be selected based on demonstrated student outcomes in reading proficiency.

o   After completion students may achieve proficiency by passing the alternate test or the reading portfolio.

o   The content and structure of the portfolio will be determined by NC DPI.

o   If students are proficient they are promoted to fourth grade.  If the student is not proficient the student moves into the next school year with a retained label in PowerSchool

o   If a student does not attend Summer Reading Camp the child is retained in a third grade classroom

Component Five- 3/4 Transitional Class or Accelerated Class

o   Students retained after grade three who attended Summer Reading Camp may either be placed in a Transitional Classroom or an Accelerated Reading Class.

o   Transitional 3/4 classroom is a classroom specifically designed to produce learning gains sufficient to met fourth grade performance standards while continuing to remediate areas of reading deficiency.

o   Accelerated Reading Class focuses instructional supports and services provided to increase a student’s reading level at least two grades in one school year.

o   Retained students have an opportunity for mid-year promotion by passing the third grade Alternate Test or by portfolio.

o   Proficient students have the retained label removed in PowerSchool, and continue in the same classroom with intensive reading instruction.

Component Six-Responsiveness to Instruction

o   DPI promotes RtI

Component Seven- Kindergarten

o   2014-15 all kindergarten students will be given an entry assessment that will be provided from NCDPI

o   The assessment will generate a child profile that is part of the K-3 assessment process

·        Beginning of year reading test for Grade 3 will begin fall 2013.

There will be an important Meeting to be held on June 13th here at Diggs-Latham for all 3rd grade teachers across the district. We are hosting the meetings. There are 3 times to choose from: 8:30-9:45, 10:15-11:30 and 3:45-5:00.  Third grade teachers only need to attend one of the sessions. We are holding three to accommodate your schedules and those of teachers who still have students at Petree and Forest Park.  Mr. Friel and I are on the committee to help roll out this program in our district.  I will be sending you more information as well.
